It can definitely harm a civilization if these are not sought after as the civilization will be slower to gain the advantages that other civilizations will obtain by advancing their ideology. Art, music, literature, theater, and architecture play a large role within the game as obtaining these grants the player culture that can, in turn, be used to advance a civilization's social structure and ideology. Outside of these worker's and artistic guilds, the only other societies that are represented are the political society of the leaders and your advisers, and the military. These are all primary separated by the worker's trades. Societies within the game are bunched together based on what the player creates for his civilizations as artist guilds, writer's guilds and various other guilds can be formed after the production of different buildings and wonders.
In Civilization 5, the game addresses society and its categories and artistic endeavors in various ways. I had a great experience with the game, and felt like it was a great tool in showing how civilizations were built and thrived and how others struggled for power. All humans develop and act upon ideas as religion, ideologies, and politics begin to play a big role in the game after the meeting of other civilizations. All humans interact with their natural environment as it provides them with the resources they need to survive. The game reflects the three fundamentals of human interactions as well, as all the civilizations look to explore and meet the other nations, and interact with one another in the World Congress. Religion can also provide other advantages to civilizations as the religion provides more benefits as it grows. Once the World Religion is voted on, civilizations that follow that religion gain extra delegates in the next meeting of the congress. Religion plays a large role in the game, especially with the creation of the World Congress. Military forces and cities also depend on the environment for advatages and disadvantages on the battlefield. Cities are dependant on the resources that surround them, if the evnironment around a city is poor in resources, the city will not thrive. The environment plays a vital role in the development of cities and battles. Once all technologies are obtained, a civilization can use nuclear weapons, XCOM soliders, and space ships to help obtain their goals of victory. Without the use of technology, the civilization will be stuck in the Stone Age, with settlers, warriors, and a few buildings. Technology is used as the process to gain new items within the game.
